Sri Lanka has one of the most unique food cultures in the world as it is a multi-cultural country. By the way, the official meal of Sri Lanka is rice and curry. Most Sri Lankans prefer vegetable curries and some people include meat or fish curry in their meals as well. They use Sri Lankan hot spices to make the food because those spices add a great flavor to the curry, give a good smell, and keep people healthy with the ayurvedic value. Chili powder, mustard seeds, cinnamon, and cloves are some of the main spices that add flavor to the meals. In some people's meals, dhal curry is a must. To balance various tastes people, add something savory and something sweet to their meal as well. Some people make chutneys and pickles and store them in the kitchen pantries to use on special occasions and some in everyday occurrences.

Also, Sri Lankans eat roti, hoppers, and string hoppers,especiallyfor their breakfast and dinner with a vegetable or a dhal curry. Lankans don't use alcoholic beverages with their meals. They either drink hot tea, coffee, plain tea, or fresh juice with their meal. And to Sri Lankan celebrations, people don't forget to make traditional Sri Lankan meals that are mouthwatering.

Rice and curry

Rice and curry which is the national dish of Sri Lanka is a delicious meal. It consists of hot steamed rice and some curries. There are normally at least 3-5 curries served along with rice so there's a big variety of tastes in one meal. Most of Sri Lankans usually consume rice for lunch and some people eat it for dinner too. The traditional way of eating rice and curry is using fingers. From that people can mix the curries with rice so well and can enjoy the meal well. Some people add 'papadam' which is a crispy thing and some fried chilies to the rice meal additionally. Rice and curry is a meal that can be found in any restaurant in Sri Lanka. Some restaurants serve the rice and curry in a banana leaf or in a lotus leaf that past Sri Lankans used.

Kottu

Kottu which is an inexpensive go-to meal was first made in Eastern coastal towns of Sri Lanka. It is a kind of delicious spicy meal. This is one of the most popular meals in Sri Lanka. The word 'kottu' means to chop. Kottu is made with eggs, onions, spices, and chilies. People can ask to add chicken, seafood, and cheese according to their preferences as well. In some restaurants, there is a place called 'kottu hut' which is an open kitchen area. So, people can see how the kottu is making.

Hoppers

Hopper is a bowl-shaped pancake that is made from rice flour and coconut milk. Hopper is also a delicious food that can easily be found everywhere in Sri Lanka. Most people usually eat this with chili onion sambal (lunumiris) or with dhal curry. In Sri Lanka, hoppers are called as 'Appa'. Usually, Sri Lankans eat hoppers as breakfast and some as dinner meals. Hopper is a yummy and healthier meal and a snack as well. There are plain hoppers and egg hoppers that are usually made in Sri Lankan restaurants. Egg hoppers are made with an egg cracked in the bottom of the plain hopper. Adding salt and pepper to the egg hopper can increase the level of tastiness.

Thosai/ Dosai

Thosai is a South Indian meal, but also a popular food among Sri Lankans. Thosai is the main meal of the Jaffna people. Usually, Sri Lankans eat thosai for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is made with black gram/ urad dal. It can eat with sambar, chutney, sambal, and with chicken curry. Dosai is also a great source of carbohydrates and protein. It is an inexpensive meal too. There are various kinds of dosai apart from plain dosa. Some of them are masala dosa, onion dosa, cheese dosa, and pizza dosa.

Jackfruit curry

Jackfruit curry is a delicious traditional meal in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka jackfruit is called 'Polos' which is young green jackfruit. Polos are good for health as well. It is high in vitamin A and helps to prevent diseases like cancer. Jackfruit is off-white in color with a green color outer skin. Polos is perfect for vegetarians. The reason why jackfruit is very popular is because of its meaty texture. The polos curry can make with the same taste of meat curry. Jackfruit is watery and bitter before cooking but the flavors and techniques that use when cooking the curry help to increase the tastiness. If you visit Sri Lanka, this is one of the meals you don’t want to miss.

Pol roti

Pol roti, also known as coconut roti (a rustic flatbread), is a delicious meal that can be easily prepared. Pol roti is a meal that can find in most Sri Lankan restaurants. This is also one of the inexpensive go-tomeals. This can be eaten for breakfast, dinner, or as a snack.

The process of making pol roti is easy. By mixing shredded coconut with flour, add some salt, coconut oil, and water and make a dough with it. And then making small balls with the dough, leaving it for a few hours, rolling them out, and flipping them on the pan are all have to do.

Sri Lankans usually eat pol roti with chili onion sambal, coconut sambal, or with dhal or spicy curry. Lankans also like to drink plain tea while eating pol roti. This is a delicious meal as well as a healthy meal that boosts weight loss.
