Sri Lanka's Gemstone Heritage
Sri Lanka, known as "Ratna- Dweepa" or gem island, is rich in gemstones, boasting a variety that includes blue sapphire, pink sapphire or ruby, and yellow sapphire among others. Ratnapura, the 'City of Gems', lies at the foot of Adam's Peak and close to Sinharaja Rain Forest, housing a gem museum with a breathtaking display of precious and semi-precious gemstones. The world's largest natural corundum blue sapphire, "Queen of Asia," and other world-famous gemstones such as Giant of the Orient and Logan blue sapphire have been found in Ratnapura, enhancing Sri Lanka's reputation as a premier gemstone destination.
Blue Sapphire
Sri Lanka is renowned for its quality blue sapphires, claiming the top three largest blue sapphires globally. The "Star of the Adam," the largest certified blue sapphire, weighed 1395 carats and was valued at over $100M, highlighting the significance and value of Sri Lankan blue sapphires. The color of blue sapphires, which can vary due to titanium and iron taint, is especially vibrant in Sri Lankan sapphires due to their low iron content, making them more valuable. Blue sapphires from Sri Lanka are categorized into various shades, including pastel, cornflower, peacock, velvet, royal, indigo, and twilight, each offering a unique allure.
Pink Sapphire
Pink Sapphire, a rare and stunning gemstone, is highly sought after by visitors to Sri Lanka. Available in shades ranging from light pink to purplish and orangey pink, pink sapphires symbolize femininity, love, and compassion. The gemstone's value is determined by its size, color, carats, and cut. Sri Lanka is a preferred destination for purchasing pink sapphires, locally known as 'Padparadscha', meaning 'color of the lotus', due to their exquisite color and reflection.
Yellow Sapphire
Known as Pukhraj in Sri Lanka, Yellow Sapphire represents divine grace and power and is believed to provide mental health, courage, and happiness. The gemstone's price varies with its carat weight, cut quality, and color richness, averaging $420 per carat. Yellow Sapphire ranges in color from pale to golden yellow and is significant in Vedic astrology. It belongs to the corundum family, sharing its lineage with ruby and blue sapphire, and is valued for its clarity and color consistency.
Ruby
Ruby, mined in Sri Lanka and known as 'Ratna Raja' or the king of gems, is deep red in color and associated with love, passion, energy, wealth, and prosperity. The value of a ruby is influenced by its vivid red color, clarity, transparency, cut, and size. Pigeon Blood rubies, known for their exceptional quality, are among the most expensive. Considered the most valuable gemstone variety in the Corundum mineral species, fine rubies are a testament to their durability and the rich gemstone heritage of Sri Lanka.
